Garland & Smitty

Garland Shirley retired in 2009 from the City of Des Moines where he served as a firefighter and paramedic. Shirley spent the entirety of his career with the Des Moines Fire Department, working out of Station 2 located on East 18th and Walnut specializing in rapid extrication. Because of his paramedic level training, he was often assigned to medic squads throughout the other stations in the city. In 2007, while performing ice water training at Grays Lake, he aspirated ice water into his lungs that caused severe scarring. Due to the injury, he was forced to medically retire in 2009. After years of treatments and declining lung function, in 2017 Shirley had a bilateral lung transplant. In addition to being a firefighter/paramedic, Shirley has also coached club and high school softball. Shirley was named Clarke University's head softball coach in July of 2018.

Shirley has four children: Vanessa, Dominique, D’riece, and Dion Shirley He resides in Dubuque, Iowa with his Fiancé, Angela McGuire.

Smitty is named for Lowrie (Smitty) Smith. Smitty was born in 1924, in Scranton, Iowa, went to Dubuque Senior High School through 10th grade, and joined the U.S. Navy in 1943, where he was a Corpsman (medic). He was later given a high school diploma for service to his country. While stationed at Corpus Christi, Texas, Smitty met Gloria, whom he married in 1945. When Smitty received orders to go to sea on August 1, 1945, he didn't know where he was going. Once at sea, he and his shipmates learned they were on their way to invade Japan. The U.S. dropped the atomic bomb in August 1945, which caused Japan to surrender. Smitty returned on December 10, 1945, and mustered out on December 18, 1945. Smitty was donated by Chris & Ron Shanahan at Iron Hill Retrievers.
